Okay, so there are things you can do to help more of your videos appear in the Sidebar/Up next column and the related videos (the grid of thumbnails that appears at the end of your videos).
But to understand how we’ve first got to look at where YouTube gets the videos that appear there, it’s really a combination of things:
- Previously watched videos
- Subscription Feed
- Search Term
- Title & Supporting Video SEO (description & tags)
- Watch Time
- How many people watch video A then go onto watch video B.
There’s some you can’t help which is new videos from your subscription list and advertisements.
The main ones are the last two. Now at first when your video is first uploaded to YouTube it knows nothing about it, so that’s where your Title, Description and Tags come into play, but after a while when it learns how many people are watching and what they’re doing it gets better at showing more relevant videos by basing it more on Watch Time.
So, to help your chances one of the best things you can do is put your videos into playlists, specifically into Series Playlists. So get sending people into the playlist of your videos not just the video as if someone finishes watching one the next video is instantly loaded and on they go for another video and your Watch Time grows exponentially.
So in your videos you should also be promoting your playlists, not just your video, as you can see on the end of my videos it shows a thumbnail of a video but if you click the link it takes you into the playlist mode and starts playing. Use both cards and annotations to accomplish this.
Next we’ll have a quick look at the description, now for each video you should have a consistent description point, most likely the 2nd half of your video description. On mine I put the normal optimised description for the video but after I’ve finished there is the constant of music, social media, links to gear. This helps YouTube see that your video is similar.
And by doing these things, you’ll find that more and more of your own videos appear in that feed and so more and more of your videos will be watched and you’ll see more and more growth in subscribers.
TL;DR – Do everything I’ve been going on about in these blog posts and on my YT channel.
