How To Use Social Media To Promote Your Videos

In the first couple of weeks after releasing a new vlog is when YouTube really takes note of your video.

It’s the most critical time for your videos’ promotion as the more views you get in those first couple of weeks the more YouTube promotes it. So here’s the ways I use the 3 main social media sites to gain views, plus a few you might not think of.

1. Twitter

I don’t know about you but Twitter is where I get about 60% of my views as it’s easy to setup and integrate on YouTube.

Whenever you like a video it can be automatically posted on there and whenever one of your videos gets liked by someone that goes to all of their followers and you can retweet their like to get even more of your followers to go watch it that didn’t previously see it or might’ve missed it.

Be strategic with the retweets of tweets that like your video though, don’t just spam them all at the same time, spread them out over a couple of days at the best times for your audience, there’s no point retweeting at 1am unless your audience is awake at that time.

2. Instagram

Instagram is a tricky one and I use a tool to help me get the most out of it.

So, after I’ve posted a new video I wait a day or so as the retweets are going on, then I use a website called socialport.tv, now that website creates an auto playing snippet of your video for Twitter, Facebook and Instagram, it’s about $5 a month (there’s a free 7 day trial) and it takes the legwork out of doing it yourself.

So I go to the website, put the link to my video in, it does the conversion and posts the link on Twitter, then I go back and put the link in again but this time for Instagram (I choose the email me the video option as I’m on an iPhone) and it converts and emails the video, save it to your device and post it on Instagram the next day or day after.

When you’re posting it onto Instagram type something that will “hook” your followers, nothing clickbaity or false but something interesting about what they can expect to see. At the end of what you type put “link is in my profile” to let them know, and in your profile put the link to your latest video.

We need to do this as Instagram doesn’t allow any http links on posts, also, don’t forget your tags, Instagram loves tags use them to your advantage, aim for about 10-15 relevant tags. #motovlog #motovlogger #smallyoutubers #smallyoutuber #youtube #vlog are a few of the standard ones I use.

Share the Instagram post direct to Twitter and Facebook as well for more exposure.

3. Facebook

Facebook really is a pain in the arse and its up to you how you want to play it.

Facebook doesn’t like you having a profile for your motovlogging persona and you could get it deleted without warning, so, you need to create a page for yourself with your personal profile which, in itself, limits you in what you can do.

With the ability to put full videos up there is it better to upload a snippet to tease people into going to your vlog or just to upload the full video to Facebook and try to build a separate audience on there?

I’m not sure at the minute so I’m testing between both to see which is better. For this I use a combination of socialport.tv and a browser extension called TubeBuddy. I’m not gonna go over TubeBuddy and what it does as that’d take an entire post up but something it does is allows me to publish direct to Facebook from within YouTube, something you can’t do normally, again I wait a day or so after the Twitter bombardment to do it but not at the same time as Instagram. Again use 10-15 tags as Facebook also does tags.

Special Mentions

They’re the main 3, but a quick thing you can do is share your videos to a few other notable ones by using the share function at the bottom of your videos. Now the main ones I use are Reddit, StumbleUpon and Pinterest. Reddit is ok but the motovlogging reddits don’t get much traction but you could get a few views from there, more if it’s something that could go viral.

Stumbleupon and Pinterest won’t garner you tons of views but they’re high level websites by that I mean Google likes them so it’s more link juice for you. Just post the links on both of them and leave them be, you might get a few views but it’s mainly about seo link juice. And they’re the top social media sites to promote your videos and how.

I hope you enjoyed reading this and let me know in the comments below if you have any questions about social media and how to promote your videos.
