Step Away From The Numbers - YouTube Analytics

19.12.2017
When we first start a YouTube channel it's easy to fall into the trap of looking too much at the analytics. Now the analytics are a wonderful tool but they can also be a bad thing, a lot of people quit YouTube because they're not getting the views or watch time they once had. So we need to really step away from the numbers game of YouTube and just get back to making content we love to make a really enjoy the whole process of it, a lot of YouTube channels now feel like they're engineered to get views and latch onto trends just solely to get money and to me the whole point of making videos is the fun creative part of it, not looking at the numbers as the goal but just part of the journey. Enjoy making videos and views or not you'll always love making them if you base making videos on whether or not you'll get x amount of views or not then when you don't get them you're more likely to quit. Just think, I don't even charge you for this viewing pleasure. Aren't you lucky. Getting Views For Your Channel With The Power Of The Anti-Trend

04.09.2017
So in the YouTube playbook, they'll tell you to latch onto trending topics and make videos on them to get exposure, this can work very well but if everyone is doing lots of videos on the same subject how can you make your own stand out from the sea of videos? Enter the Anti-Trend, a simple concept really but one that can work even better for you, now, rather than doing the same as everyone else you'll take the trending topic and flip it someway, go against the grain, carve a different path and have a different opinion to everyone else that's latching onto the trending topics. Not only can this help you piggyback the trending topic but also set your video apart as people will be more likely to check something out that isn't the norm, sometimes out of sheer curiosity. It stands out more and could potentially get not only people that are interested in the topic but interested in what you have to say, then you could potentially find those like minded people and form great connections with them, turning them into loyal subscribers for years. Just think, I don't even charge you for this viewing pleasure. Aren't you lucky. The Pareto Principle & How It Affects Your YouTube Channel

30.08.2017
The Pareto principle (also known as the 80/20 rule, the law of the vital few, or the principle of factor sparsity) states that, for many events, roughly 80% of the effects come from 20% of the causes. Management consultant Joseph M. Juran suggested the principle and named it after Italian economist Vilfredo Pareto, who noted the 80/20 connection while at the University of Lausanne in 1896. Essentially, Pareto showed that approximately 80% of the land in Italy was owned by 20% of the population; Pareto developed the principle by observing that about 20% of the peapods in his garden contained 80% of the peas. We can apply this 80/20 principle to our channels and make life easier for us, how? Well, it boils down to the basics which, unfortunately, a lot of YouTubers fall flat on their face from. So what is the 20% we can do to get 80% of the results for your videos and channel? First up is the channel, I talked about channel setup in this video: Basic stuff really, banner art, avatar, channel layout, the about page, all really basic. Another thing is thumbnails, are they good enough? Are they branded? Are they consistent in their styling? Easily Identifiable? Attractive enough? Little bits of effort. Thirdly is the descriptions, a few paragraphs of text you can write while waiting for the video to upload and process, it's not hard to do, I did a video on that as well: Fourth is playlists, get using them, organise your videos into playlists, get the playlists on your channel page, youtube search results show playlists in a totally separate results page. Not only that, if people get to watch a playlist, the next video auto-plays so people binge watch your stuff. Lastly is tags, the most basic and often overlooked item is tags. many people don't do them because they're maybe not comfortable with them or think they don't make a difference. Not true, although they hold less weight than they once did tags still play a part in letting YouTube know what your video is about and if you have the correct terms in your tags they can help your video rank higher. 5 things that make up the 20% of effort you can do to get 80% of the results. How To Get Clear Audio - 5 Tips For Better Sounding Motovlogs

21.08.2017
Back at it again with another tips video, this time we're touching on the often worrying topic of sound, good sound is crucial to a good vlog, you can have the most awesome looking vlogs ever but if you have bad sound nobody will stick around to see them. Now, bad audio had plagued motovloggers since the dawn of motovlogging and there are ways you can get clear audio for motovlogs which I did a video on here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9i-... Today we're going to talk about 5 other ways we can get clear audio for your motovlogs, including wind removal or reduction. It's tricky being a motovlogger with audio, having the mic in the wrong place can really ruin a vlog, but anyway, here's the 5 new tips/tricks to help you get the clearest audio you can for motovlogging or anywhere in a high noise environment... 1. Use a Decent Quality Microphone. This should go without saying really but it still baffles me as to why people pay for the cheap Chinese knock offs on eBay or amazon and expect good sound from them. If you use a Drift get the official one, if you use anything else go with one of the main brands, Rode, Shure, Sennheiser. Buy cheap you get cheap and a bad microphone is a lot of times the main problem, you can get 2nd hand ones at a decent price on eBay and the like. 2. Use a High Pass Filter High-pass filters remove frequencies below a chosen point — they let the high frequencies pass (hence the name) and filter out the low frequencies. They are generally used to remove unnecessary lower bass frequencies like the rumble of a bus or the thump of a bass drum. High-pass filters are wonderful at solving a few problems both in the studio and in the field. P-pops can be a prevalent problem in both situations, and high-pass filters (combined with good mic placement) often help to reduce them. In the field, wind buffeting and mic-handling noise can also be tamed with this tool Most video editors these days come with an ability to add a high pass filter in post production, be wary though, too much and your audio can sound "tinny" too little and there's no point, it really is a balancing act of tinny sounding and noise removal. 3. Use A Noise Gate When you have recorded speech or vocals, you generally don't want anything but that speech or vocals. Regardless, you often end up with breathing and other noise you don't want. If you have a decent recording to start with, a noise gate is a simple tool that can help you remove unwanted background noise like breathing or wind. Using a noise gate is really easy you turn the noise gate on for the track that contains your recording and then set the threshold of the noise gate anywhere from -100dB to 0dB. The threshold is basically the softest your audio track can get without being silenced by the noise gate. If you set it to -10dB, pretty much everything would be silenced unless it was fairly loud. If you set it to -100dB, it would be like the noise gate wasn't really even active in the first place. 4. Use An External Recorder Like The Zoom H2N Nothing can beat a dedicated audio recorder like a Zoom H2N for the best audio, action cameras are great but audio isn't their strong suit. With something dedicated like a Zoom H2N, you have full control over your audio, from the gain, gate, levels, cut off filter. Combine it with a decent Shure or Rode microphone and good placement and you'll have one of the best setups for a lavalier microphone. 5. Having The Microphone Too Close To Your Mouth A rookie mistake, having the microphone too close doesn't allow the air to escape and it just rushes into the microphone and you get horrible audio with what is known as the proximity effect. Proximity effect is this phenomenon that happens with directional microphones, particularly cardioid mics. When you place a cardioid microphone closer to the source, it tends to pick up more low frequencies. This is the proximity effect. Just think, I don't even charge you for this viewing pleasure. Aren't you lucky. HBO GoT Hacked - YouTubers Need To Protect Themselves

14.08.2017
HBO, the makers of Game Of Thrones were hacked recently, the hackers demanded a payment of around $6 million in Bitcoin for the return of the data they stole, the hackers got emails, financial information, scripts and the like. No episodes of GoT were stolen but they managed to get quite a few things that could ruin the series for a lot of fans. How did they get hacked? Nobody apart from the hackers and HBO know that. But whenever a big company gets hacked it always brings up the topic of internet security for everyone, and now if you haven't done it is the time to rethink how secure your YouTube channel is. Most of us don't think we'll get hacked. We're only small, nobody cares about a small YouTuber enough to hack them... well being a small YouTuber in my mind makes us one of the most targetted people for hackers. The main reason I have for this is that we're practice. We're the testers for the new programs and scripts to brute force their way into accounts before they move onto bigger targets. So what can we do to protect our YouTube channel? Well for one we need a strong password, no dictionary words, a combination of alpha numerical characters in Capitalized form and not. A hexadecimal password is best. Norton has their own password generator and I'd use that over one of these online ones as you can be sure of the legitimacy. You can find it on Norton's website. Secondary we can set our accounts to have two-factor authentication, easy to setup and use with apps like Authy or Google's Authenticator, it adds another layer of defence to your account. If you don't have the apps then you can still get two-factor auth for most sites via text message, however via text is the least secure. The most secure way for two-factor auth is via a USB device that you have on your person. However two-factor auth does have its weaknesses against a sophisticated user and another way we can protect our accounts is to have multiple registered email addresses, a different login email for each social media, definitely, no personal emails should be linked to your online life ones. and having 2fa on each of them as well. This is in no way guaranteed to protect you and there's always a way into any system, but, with these basic steps, you give yourself a fighting chance. Just think, I don't even charge you for this viewing pleasure. Aren't you lucky. How To Hook Viewers Into Watching More Of Your Videos

12.08.2017
The analytics of a video can be an amazing tool but have you ever gone into your YouTube analytics, into the Audience Retention part and had a look at if people are sticking around to watch all of your videos? You can switch the view to absolute and see just when people are leaving your videos. More than likely people will leave within the first 15-20 seconds, for a few reasons. 1. They mis-clicked and didn't really want to watch. 2. The content isn't what they thought it was. 3. You didn't hook them in. Now, whenever someone comes to a video you've got about 15-20 seconds to hook the viewer and make them want to watch more, this is because we make snap decisions as to whether or not we'll watch something. if something doesn't grab us we're more likely to let it go in search of what we really want. So here are some ways in which you can hook viewers into more of your content, improve your audience retention, watch time, views and engagement. 1. Say what you're going to be talking about. 2. Tease viewers with short fast-paced clips of the best bits. 3. Tell people a problem but also give them a solution. 4. A success story, overcoming something. How To Setup Your Channel Page To Get More Subscribers

15.07.2017
I don't know about you but I get most of my subscribers from my channel page, not on videos. If you look in your analytics you'll more than likely see the same thing. You see the majority of people don't just watch one video and fall in love with a channel, it usually takes a few videos for someone to be invested in you and your content. So how do they get invested and watch more of your videos? Well they go to your channel page and check out the rest of your videos. You as a Youtuber can make it easier for people to find your stuff by laying out your channel page in the best way possible to get people watching more and subscribing. Your channel page is one of the most important parts of your whole time on YouTube and neglecting it can lead to people quickly abandoning your channel and not coming back whereas a well laid out channel with a good banner, avatar and social media links plus a trailer or featured video followed by playlists can be the best thing you ever do. Get people interested in your channel and make your channel look more professional and like you're going to be on here for a long time and that will also help people decide to hit that subscribe button. However, your existing subscribers tend not to go back to your channel page that often, relying on finding your content through the homepage, subscription feed or up next column. So, here's how to setup your channel page to entice people to hit that subscribe button and come back for more. How To Promote Your Channel Without Sounding Like A Tw@

03.07.2017
We all want to get more views, more subs and more people commenting on our videos and channel, it's natural to want that we all want recognition for our efforts but how do we promote those things to an audience without sounding needy or like we're begging for them to stay around? To me, it's the when why and how: When. At least once per videos, preferably twice, too many people devote too much time to asking for subscribers, when you do this you break the flow of the video and do it too much and people not only notice it, but they actively go against it. I've seen so many YouTubers ask for people to subscribe, comment and like a video so many times you could half the length of the video and it'd still make sense, it's just filled with begging. Why. Give people a reason to subscribe, I've said it loads of times before, give them a reason, tell them what they're getting if they subscribe to you and watch your content. It's something a lot of YouTubers don't do, and they just default to the standard, "Hit subscribe". When you give people a reason to subscribe they're more likely to do it... as long as you deliver on what you promise that is. How. Don't do the typical "Like, Comment, Subscribe" trifecta of nothingness that comes out of a lot of people's mouths on YouTube, you have the when, you have the why, so give them that reason, make it natural and not one big segment of your video, inject it into your content, don't make a big song and dance out of it. Don't ask people constantly for comments and subscribers etc... make it natural, don't try and sell the channel to people. Focus on making good content for people and the subscribers will come. People are attracted to good quality content. Just think, I don't even charge you for this viewing pleasure. Aren't you lucky. How To Get Views Fast And Easy With Trending Topics

21.06.2017
Trending topics are one of the easiest and fastest ways to get views, now they're also ways for your channel to get exposure to people who aren't in your circle. They're around all the time on YouTube, just have a look at places like DramaAlert or Philip DeFranco or Scarce (where the fuck is he btw?). Also check out the trending page on YouTube and you can also go to google.com/trends and find out what's trending worldwide or in your country. If they're controversial topics they're sure to get views, it's just how it is, if you want to do a video on a trending topic make sure you actually believe the words that are coming out of your mouth as people will be able to tell if you're being genuine and have a real point to make, or are just trying to ride the view train. How To Deal With Internet Trolls On YouTube

19.06.2017
Inevitably as we're on the internet we open ourselves up to the world and the world isn't all nice, trolls are out there and they're ready to come and try to wreck your day, so how do we deal with the trolls we receive on YouTube? Well there's 3 options really that's open to us: 1. Ignore them This is the easiest and most effective, simply ignoring the comments means that the trolls don't get what they want, which is recognition, don't bite and they'll most likely go elsewhere. 2. Bite back Only do this if you have a thick skin and can give as much as you can take. Taking on a troll can be fun, the back and forth can be great and just think, it boosts the engagement level on your video which has a slight (minimal) effect on it's promotion within YouTube. 3. Block them Simple as really, if a person is coming onto your channel constantly trolling then you can just block them, click on their username, then to the about tab, then click the little flag icon and choose block. If they're really bad then you can report their ass, which I recommend before blocking them. choose an option and follow the steps, you might get the person's account deleted as well saving other creators from their trolling. And that's it, personally, the ignore method works the best as the other two give them the recognition they're after. But if it really is getting too much for you then just report and block them. Just think, I don't even charge you for this viewing pleasure. Aren't you lucky. How To Improve The Flow Of Your Vlogs With One Simple Trick

17.06.2017
So you might be a very disorganised vlogger, recording bits of footage all across a day or two, or you're going on a long journey and the resulting clips just seem a bit disjointed and the whole flow of the vlog is ruined because of it, well, fear not, if you do have disorganised or disjointed vlogs there is a way to save them. The way I'm talking about is to use Title Cut Screens, now title cut screens as shown in the video today are quick little cut screens that have a title on.... hence the name. This can explain to the audience what you're talking about in a more succinct manner, it can bring together the entire vlog and massively improve the flow of it. This can result in a greater audience retention, more engagement a longer watch time which results in your videos getting promoted more across YouTube. How To Get Your YouTube Videos On The First Page Of Google

14.06.2017
This time I’ve got a quick video for you about how to get your videos to appear on the first page of Google, not YouTube, but the one that gets over 3.5 billion searches per day, now this can be great for getting people onto your channel as you’ll typically appear on the first page within the first few links with your thumbnail in there as well. Now, Google uses very very complex algorithms to decide on what to show to a search query, but, there are certain types of search queries that will always show video results, why is this important to us? Because the vast majority of people use Google to search for things, and if you can bring someone into YouTube from Google then YouTube rewards your video and your channel by promoting the video more as it sees it as something of value. This can lead you to get lots of views and potential subscribers but be warned, people looking for quite a lot of these terms are passive viewers, less likely to turn into subscribers, you need to do that within your video by cross promoting your typical videos by using a combination of an end card, annotations and cards. The search terms that typically show video results are as follows: “tutorial” “review” “test” “what is…” “how to…” “demonstration” “explanation” If the title of your video has one of these words in, then Google, as it owns YouTube, will usually show video results, and if your video is one that doesn’t have lots of competition then you’ll most likely be shown first or you’ll be the only one. Now, to help our video when it appears on the first page we need it to be high quality, have an appealing thumbnail and title with a good, well thought out description. Google when showing YouTube videos in the results picks up typically the first 10-20 words (on desktop only) so, in your description sell the potential viewer the reason to watch in there. Although this typically gets you passive views and not real subscribers that will interact with you, it can be great for if you have affiliation links in the description where you can make a bit of something from the sale of an item Music by DJ Quads: https://soundcloud.com/aka-dj-quads Just think, I don't even charge you for this viewing pleasure.
